Vintage Santo Domingo Turquoise Tab Heishi Necklace 30 Inch 198 Gram
This is a listing for a vintage Santo Domingo turquoise necklace. It's strung with hand cut large turquoise tabs that are spaced with large hand rolled heishi. It's a metal free piece and substantial with a wearing length of 30 inches and a weight of 198 grams. That's a heavy weight for any necklace and exceptional for a single strand, which reflects the large size and density of the turquoise beads... Even more impressive because metal free pieces usually have several inches of either a squaw wrap or plain heishi.
And this piece has the large tab cut beads all the way to the top. The stringing artist graduated the beads beautifully. The largest tabs measure 1 to 1 and 1/8th inches in length and 5/8th to 7/8th inches wide.
The small tabs at the very top measure 5/8th inches in length and over 3/8th inches wide. Those are good sized beads and they are the smallest beads. The heishi at the base are 10mm wide and at the top they are 6mm.Beautiful subtle graduation on a long piece with a change in size of only 4 mm for the heishi and. 5 inches for the tabs over 30 inches of wearing length.
4 turquoise nuggets finish the necklace. The stringing is in excellent condition and very secure for wear.
I took photos of the turquoise in natural as well as on flash. The first photo is done on flash and I think that is an accurate image as far as the color of the beads. The 2nd photo is natural light and it doesn't quite reflect the richness and beautiful shading of the turquoise. The shade is a true aqua or teal.. A perfect blend of blue and green with a golden brown matrix.
Kingman or Blue Gem would both be a good choice. The turquoise has a beautiful strong polish and there are no broken or missing beads. There is a place in the stringing where 2 heishi are strung together. Either an oversight by the artist, or deliberately done to match and balance the beads.
The neckace has a wonderful, flexible drape with no gaps or stretching of the string. It requires a lot of talent and skill to hand cut beads of this quality.
