Circa 1920s Hand Wrought Navajo Naja Pendant Necklace. Pendant: 4 Raw Turquoise Nuggets & Traditional Stampings The outer nuggets run 11-12 mm & the center is 10 mm. Chain: Handmade Benchwork Navajo Pearl & Melon Beads strung on chain. Marks (photo 9): Navajo with a prominent underlined N followed by faint lettering; Underlined M and possibly a smaller M next to it. In the Navajo language it means crescent shape or curve.

This amulet, originally used on the browband of Moorish Horses to keep away the evil eye, is thought to have been handed down from the Spanish Moors to Spanish caballeros in Mexico. It is unclear whether the Navajo adopted the crescent directly from the Spanish or from the Plains Indian.
