Native American gourd dance rattle, likely used in ceremonies and pow-wows. It is associated with the Kiowa tribe, but its use has spread.
The gourd dance, for which the rattle is used, honors warriors and veterans. The rattle's sound is believed to create vibrations that raise spiritual awareness. This one was made using a painted and decorated metal shaker, beadwork, carved wood handle, horsehair and fringe. The dance and rattle are part of the Gourd Clan's traditions, who have their own songs, dances, and regalia.
The rattle accompanies the rhythm of Native American drums. Very nice piece of Native American culture. Beautiful beadwork and turned wood handle.
