He is quite good at it. There was a'scandal' at some time by the identity politics folks claiming that he was not an American Indian, although he says some of his ancestors were Brule Sioux. He is not, however, a card-carrying member of a recognized Indian tribe. White is a well known artist, and this is a wonderful piece of art. The background is in the Cheyenne Pink color of seed beads so popular with Sioux and Cheyenne bead artists.
It is done in a'lane stitch' or'lazy stitch' technique. (Believe me, there is nothing lazy about it). The pictographs are of an Indian and a cavalryman facing each other on charging horses. The guidon flag of the 7th cavalry - Custer's outfit - is shown at the top, along with Sioux 4-pointed stars. Signed in the beadwork as shown. The rear is in a similar pink fabric. About 32" across the bottom and 34" at the bottom of the armholes. I made the coat hanger by by soaking and bending the wood and tying on the buckskin loop. I think it is a good way to display it.This item is in the category "Collectibles\Cultures & Ethnicities\Native American: US\Non-Native American Crafts".
