ANTIQUE NATIVE AMERICAN IROQUOIS BEADED PURSE. Up for your consideration: Iroquois floral design beaded bag. Handcrafted by an Iroquois craftsman. Considering the age, I believe this bag is n very good condition. Glass beads are hand sewn onto a ground of brown velvet.
I do not see any beads to be missing. Inside bag is what I believe to be remnants of the original handle, along with two cut out numbers, 8 & 31. If you are so inclined to read into the numerology/mythological significance of those numbers, there is a strong meaning as to why they may have been tucked into this treasure. Deterioration to the red fabric border.
Inside is lined in a pale green, fabric which feels like linen. One side of bag, flap opens to a velvet uniform area connected to the lower beading. There is a thin green fabric flap between. Reverse side is the same except there is deep pocket pouch trimmed in red fabric and lined in green fabric. In place is an old pin, (pictured) which may have been to hold that flap in place. By American standards, this mid-19th century beaded purse qualifies as an antique, but in the terms of the history of the Iroquois people who made it, such keepsakes are contemporary artifacts.
